I would say this was not easy for a non-brit to understand - there were so many British references - the fact that you didn't understand the Mastermind Sketch or one of my all time faves, the breakfast sketch shows that some things don't translate - have you watched the play what I wrote with Glenda Jackson - another classic Morecambe and Wise

I loved It Ain't Half Hot Mum when I was younger. It is of its time and couldn't be made today (rightly so), but I've never found it particularly racist. I believe it was just poking fun at a range of different people and subjects. I am from the time when this was aired, so I probably have a very different perspective on it than younger generations have.

Re makeup: although cross-dressing has a long tradition on the British stage, particularly when no actresses are available (in Shakespeare's day it was illegal, in a war zone as here there were no women), _all_ live stage actors normally wear makeup - otherwise under stage lighting and being at a distance from the audience, their features and expressions would seem bland or unrecognisable.

I'm a Scot, not 'British', but this is/was a really funny series. Windsor Davis does a really good Sergeant Major concidering he did not serve. (I did, which is why I can vouch for him)

The onlooker guy seems to have a humour deficit.

From The Netherlands: The Indian bearer wears a belt on his head from ( hope I remembered it right) Eton College. A prestigeous highschool in England. Most tory ministers went to school there. The sergeant talks Welsh. The last series is far out the best, even moving in my opinion. But considered too sharp in critisizing colonisation and war. I could not find it on youtube. I was lucky to buy the whole series on dvd. Both makers of the series were in India and part of such an entertainment group. They wrote from experience.

Philip, the scene is well known to fanatics in that David Jason, who plays Del Boy, nearly 'Cracked up' (British term for losing your composure) the third time Uncle Albert went off cue with his uproar at Rodney. Watch very closely as Jason tries not to laugh but holds it back with a smile at Buster Merryfield (Uncle Albert) and he really had to hold it so as not to ruin the scene, it was genius to keep it in because most people didn't notice his reaction and it further adds to the charm of my favorite show of all time, making the whole scene even funnier

Hard to tell, but it seems you sort of mumbled over one of the great bits here, where Andre says "I'll go and get my baton... it's in Chicago!". Eric was so delighted with Andre's timing of that gag - he knew it worked, and it shows.

Felipe (sp?) looks decidedly unimpressed! Obviously not used to UK humour yet.....,.

@The Postmodern Family - to put into context Eric Morecambe, one half of the iconic British comedy duo Morecambe and Wise, was indeed a talented musician. Not only was he recognized as the premier re-creator of George Formby’s music and singing, but he was also Britain’s foremost solo instrumentalist. Eric was a maestro of the vibraphone, ukulele, and piano. It took a lot of persuasion to get Andre Previn onto the Morcombe and Wise show, and it will most probably be regarded as the best ever TV sketch ever.

People always tend to blame the motorist for road accidents but as you can see from the second clip, most of the time it's the pedestrians fault for not looking, too busy chatting, messing with their phone, wearing headphones. About time they brought back The Green Cross Code

Mr Preview (Previn) was a very good sport, he appeared on their show more than once. They made fools of quite a few British actors in their shows

Allo Allo was ten years later, based on The Secret Army a serious series about Allied soldier, mainly aircrew, escaping after being shot down, it was a parody of the film. Most of the Dad's Army cast were experienced in both WW1 & WW11 in one form or another. One of writers was in the Home Guard. There was an attempt to do a copy on American TV called The Rear Guard.
